Construction has a way of exposing the difference between how something looks on paper and how it works in the real world. Plans, specifications, schedules, and estimates are essential, but the job site adds variables that are difficult to understand until you are standing there looking at them.
That is one reason I value field experience so much. Working around construction has taught me that some of the best decisions happen when technical planning and practical experience are allowed to work together instead of competing with each other.
The drawing is the starting point, not the entire job.
A good set of plans gives everyone a common direction. But plans cannot always capture every existing condition, access issue, material challenge, weather problem, or sequencing conflict that appears once work begins.
The field forces you to compare the intended result with the conditions actually in front of you. That does not mean ignoring plans or specifications. It means understanding their purpose well enough to recognize when a condition needs to be communicated, clarified, or solved before the work continues.
Practical experience changes what you notice.
Someone who has spent time performing the work often notices problems differently. They may recognize that a particular sequence will make the next trade's job harder, that access will become an issue later, or that a detail that looks simple on paper is going to require more time in the field.
Those observations are valuable because construction is interconnected. A decision made during one phase can affect several phases that follow it. Field experience helps you think beyond the immediate task and consider what happens next.
The best project managers listen in both directions.
Project management sits between a lot of different perspectives. Owners, customers, engineers, subcontractors, suppliers, crews, and company leadership may all be focused on different parts of the same project.
I have learned that a project manager cannot simply pass information down the chain. Information has to travel back up too. When someone in the field identifies a legitimate issue, that information needs to reach the people who can evaluate it and make the appropriate decision.
Good management creates that communication loop.
Experience and engineering are not enemies.
There is a running joke in construction about contractors and engineers disagreeing with each other. The tension makes sense. Engineers are responsible for designing systems that meet technical requirements, codes, and safety standards. Contractors are responsible for figuring out how to actually build those systems under real job-site conditions.
Both perspectives matter.
The strongest projects happen when technical expertise and practical experience support each other. The goal should not be proving who is right. The goal is finding a solution that is safe, compliant, buildable, and effective.
Good decisions require knowing when to stop.
One of the most important field lessons is knowing when not to keep moving. If something does not look right, continuing work just to maintain production can turn a manageable question into an expensive problem.
Sometimes the best decision is to stop, verify the condition, communicate with the right person, and then proceed with confidence. That takes judgment because schedules matter, but so do quality and accountability.
Problem-solving is usually collaborative.
Construction problems rarely fit neatly inside one person's job description. A solution may require input from the crew performing the work, the superintendent coordinating the site, the project manager watching the schedule and budget, and an engineer or designer responsible for the technical requirements.
That has shaped the way I approach leadership. I do not think leadership means having every answer immediately. It means recognizing the problem, getting accurate information, involving the right people, and moving the project toward a solution.
The field keeps management grounded.
As responsibilities move toward estimating, project management, operations, and business development, it can become easier to see construction primarily through schedules, numbers, and reports. Those things are important, but ultimately somebody still has to build the project.
Staying connected to that reality makes better managers and, in my opinion, better businesses. Decisions should make sense not only in a meeting but also when they reach the people responsible for executing them.
That is one of the biggest lessons construction continues to teach me: good planning matters, but good planning becomes much more valuable when it stays connected to the field.
